No More Guilt: Practical Advice for Balancing Business and Family

Ever have one of those gut-wrenching moments when your kiddo asks if you’re working again, and it just about shatters you? We all have those moments of guilt, where we’re torn between work and the people we love. You might even catch yourself thinking, “I have to do this, for them.” But let’s face it, sometimes we’re just kidding ourselves.

Take the story of a mom I chatted with recently. She was stepping out for some well-deserved “me” time and got hit with, “I thought you weren’t working today, Mommy!“

Sound familiar? That twinge of guilt for taking time to recharge is something many of us know all too well, even though we know it will make us better for them.

You’re Not Alone in the Struggle

I’ve been talking to some amazing women who run their own businesses and feel this push and pull daily. Different businesses, different family dynamics, but the same heartache. Surely, there has to be a better way, right?

Good News:  There IS a Better Way!

1. Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself. Take a good hard look at where your time is going. Recognize the stuff that someone else can handle, the things that don’t really need your magic touch. It’s time to play to your strengths and find others to fill in the gaps.
2. Let Go to Grow.  You need to bust that “I’m the only one that can do it” myth.  It’s time to train and trust someone else to take over some of your load. This will free you up for the work you should really be doing (which includes those precious moments with family). It’s all about working smarter, not harder.
3. Fall in Love with Systems. Good systems keep the wheels turning smoothly, even when you’re not there to oversee every detail. It’s like setting up dominoes to fall perfectly with just one push.
4. Get the Family Involved. Got kids? Get them involved. It’s a win-win: they learn something valuable, and you get a helping hand. It’s a chance to bond and teach them a few life skills at the same time. No kids? No problem. Paying $20/hr for that help will be worth way more than you think.
5. Mind the Gap. The gap between what you earn doing your thing and what you’d pay for help. Sometimes, spending a little on support can free you up to make much more (or just enjoy life).
6. Ruthlessly Prioritize. Your time is precious, so make sure you’re spending it on what truly matters to you. Your life should work for YOU, not the other way around.
